24 February 2021: The University of Canberra will continue to move toward being a more sustainable campus next week, when staff and students take part in Clean Up Australia Day on the Bruce campus.
Kicking off at 11am on 2 March, all staff and students are invited to meet on the concourse for a safety briefing, and to collect garbage bags and PPE before moving around the campus to collect rubbish.
Associate Vice President Campus Estate, John Owens, said he hoped to see many members of the Ö±²¥ÍÑÒ community get involved in the initiative.
“We hope everybody who takes pride in how our campus looks, and more generally about Ö±²¥ÍÑÒÂ’s part in wider environmental issues, comes along to help out,” he said.
“They say many hands make light work, so I would encourage all staff and students to roll up their sleeves and get on board.”
Following the event, participants are invited to meet at the Ngunnawal Garden for a thank you barbecue lunch.
Registration for the event is essential and can be done , to comply with COVID-safe regulations.
Clean Up Australia Day is the country’s largest community-based environmental event, and Mr Owens said he was pleased to see the University showing its support.
“We are really lucky to have a 120-hectare campus with its mid-century architecture and bushland for our native species and our involvement shows we are proud of our campus,” he said.
“Participating in the event is just another example of Ö±²¥ÍÑÒÂ’s sustainability efforts, and our goal to do our best in playing a part in wider global sustainability efforts.
“It’s important to us and there are changes everyone within the University community can make toward that, no matter how big or small.”
Ö±²¥ÍÑÒ Clean Up Australia Day is a COVID-safe event, and registration is essential. Registrations close 26 February.
